Beautiful, comfortable weather at Seaside Park was the backdrop for this wonderful reunion of 20-30,000-ish music lovers. It was great to see you all on the scene again – the old friends, new friends, the younger, the older, the families and kids…

And the mega-killer line-up delivered. Despite my earnest attempt to make it in plenty of time for Steve Kimock Crazy Engine (SKCE) on Friday, I met up with unexpected delays and entered the festival after they left the stage. Consistent reports are that SKCE were awesome, and I have no doubts that it would be anything but that, especially with Bobby Vega and Bernie Worrell. Sharon Jones and The Dapkings played with all their soul – and that’s the funkin’ truth! Robert Randolph and The Family Band were powerful and amazing. I missed the part where two from the audience were invited up to play, but heard the second person could keep up and trade licks with Robert.

Furthur featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir played two energy-full sets, and we danced our faces off the entire show. They opened with a fun-packed “Golden Road To Unlimited Devotion” into “Jack Straw”; gave us an “Estimated Prophet” and “Eyes Of The World” in the first set. Bob has been putting an extra measure in between the verses – cool; and their new refrain in the “Scarlet Begonias” is pretty fine. The second set was immense with “Althea,” “The Wheel,” “Help>Slip>Franklin’s Tower” and encoring with the full “Terrapin” suite as the encore. It was cool to see Joe Russo do his triplets (or whatever it’s called on the drums) for that.

After the highlight, my comrade Sequoia and I rode bikes around Seaside Park, and caught parts of the late-night festivities that raged on all through the wee hours. Mix Master Mike at the Green Vibes Stage had a huge crowd of revelers, and Turbine had its own crowd at the mid-west vending area.

Saturday opened with Zach Deputy on the main stage. The one man has enough talent for a whole band! I caught David Gans, another one-man talent, on the Green Vibes Stage; he pleased the crowd with his originals and stories. Galactic on the main stage was phenomenal. Umphey’s McGee was impressive.

Saturday’s highlight was Rhythm Devils featuring Bill Kreutzman, Mickey Hart, and Keller Williams. They opened with a lively “Cold Rain and Snow” into “Uncle John’s Band.” With Andy Hess on bass, the full percussion sound with melodic guitar work and well-done vocals kept the crowd on their feet and boogeying. The intense energy and rhythm tinged on a very beautiful, energetic, palatable sort of electronica. Davy Noles on guitar was a rockin’ surprise… Where did he come from? He can play and sing astonishingly well, and was featured on a number of tunes that kept our attention. The one complaint I have was that Rhythm Devils played only one set – a very polished one set. I was on a high from the music when they indicated that their set was over – I was bummed. They returned for a righteous encore of “Drumz” and featured two female fire dancers clad in black-netty bodysuits, executing a well-choreographed show. In the back-end of the audience, however, some 30 yards behind the big screen, a male fire dancer gave his own fire dance, and he was absolutely pro! He swung and danced those fires in perfect motions, and took the attention away from the stage for those of us in view for a good 5-minutes until the fire burned out. (Yes, the scene at the Vibes was cool: glow villages; costumed festivities; folks on stilts; etc.)

[I can’t say enough how good both Further and Rhythm Devils were; almost as if each band intuitively went on to out-do each other. Interesting was that Further gave us “Scarlet Begonias,” and Rhythm Devils gave us the “Fire On The Mountain” the following night.]

Primus took the stage, with Les Claypool coming out in a black top hat and suit with round black-rimmed spectacles. Was it a dark magician theme? My favorite was their cover of Pink Floyd’s “In The Flesh,” which suited the darkness of their set.

Again on bikes to enjoy Seaside Park, I caught some of the Deep Banana Blackout on the Green Vibes Stage. They were ripping. Sunday’s highlight was Little Feat, who gave an exquisite show with all the songs we know and love.

I packed up to get to a Kimock show in PA after this, but I caught some of the rest on 89.5fm for the ride onward. Before I began my goodbyes, I got to meet Wavy Gravy who MC’d the Vibes, and meet his Pollywanna fish. For more cool stuff from 2010 Vibes, check out: Deadheadland.com; cool pics by Max Flatow; Full Focus Productions (may get their coverage of the Vibes televised). Vibes media coordinator, Jonathan Lobdell, and I chatted about the success and significance of the festival. Please check out our conversation in the podcast below.

Seaside Park had lots of nice camping grounds, either by trees for shade or by the seaside for the view and breeze. As always, though, prepare yourself and bring a fold out canopy. If your stamina for camping is limited, I definitely recommend the VIP ticket if you can afford it. Gathering of the Vibes does VIP nicely with showers, constant flow of snacks, hydration options, coffee, hot cocoa, and kind wait staff coming around to see that you are comfortable. There are also discounted beers and full-meals for purchase options. Outside the VIP tent, you have nice views of the stage with shade; and if you prefer to watch the concert on comfy sofas, the large-screen tvs in the VIP tent give candid coverage of the performances and a slideshow of the Vibes community during set breaks. Late night VIP also includes special late-night sets. I caught some of the Kind Budz’s kind set on Friday night. (Note: Showers were also available for non-VIP attendees for a fee and during limited hours.)

I said see you again to my old housemate, now vendor via the Solar Bus, sending out the green message. (Kudos to the Vibes for many green efforts – recycling bins, composting bins, etc. At the end of each night, garbage bags were distributed to help gather the litter of bottles and cans off the field. Everyone was reminded that the land is not for us to trash.) I left farewell/see you soon again messages via voicemail for my other comrade who was somewhere enjoying the Vibes. I was warned that Bridgeport is a city in financial straits, and while one should always exercise a degree of caution, the Bridgeport folks I met on my way in and out of the festival were kind and helpful. Heck, it’s a city with lots of heart. On the way to the festival, I was slowed down by the additional traffic of 10,000 mourners also coming into the city for a funeral for two fallen fireman. Their fellow firemen were at the Vibes all weekend to take donations for the families of the fallen. Yes, and thank you to the city of Bridgeport for having The Vibes 2010… The Vibes 2010 was great. Looking forward to Vibes 2011.
