The lines seemed to go on for miles as numerous students waited to get into the Bryce Jordan Center. Many of them were under the impression the doors were going to open at 6:30 PM, but nothing happened until about an hour later. The concert only covered about a quarter of the actual center. Once everybody got settled in, the lights went dim and B Rich stepped up to the DJ post & introduced Playboy Tre.

“Yall don’t really know Tre” – Playboy Tre on B.o.B’s “Bet I”

When Playboy Tre entered the stage, it was just his DJ/Manager B Rich and himself. He walked on stage with the type of swagger one only sees from years of performing and a command over the audience to rock out to his music. His lyrics moved smoothly throughout the song with his southern voice. I’ve noticed many times during my career here at Penn State University, usually the opening acts of many concerts receive less appreciation than they deserve. For example, Raphael Saadiq opened up for John Legend at the BJC. When he performed, much of the audience came late and very few people clapped even though he had put on an amazing performance. Fortunately, Penn State students have taken a turn for the better and they were there dancing, singing & clapping to Playboy Tre. Playboy Tre rapped many songs from a variety of releases especially from his latest free mixtape “Last Call” (click here to check it out at 2dopeboyz). Ever since his mainstream debut on B.o.B’s “Bet I”, he has not lost steam in the rap game proving himself as a contender. I would not be surprised if he was considered for XXL’s Top Ten Freshmen of 2011, with his smooth flow, rhymes and his outstanding performance.

“Can you feel my heart, now can you feel my soul. That’s the way that I think with every line and Imma be that deep till the day i die. So if you feel me now, sing it one time.” – B.o.B on “No Man’s Land”

If Playboy Tre put on an amazing performance, then B.o.B stole the concert, got it framed and mounted it on the wall for all to see & hear. B.o.B’s acted started out slow, but he quickly picked up his stride and just kept running with it. With his band, back up singers, dancers, and B Rich, he put on more than a performance, he put on a show. With live instruments, the band first got involved with the show in “Satellites” as they made eerie movements as they played. One of the most notable songs was “Letters from Vietnam”, where B.o.B utilized the guitar to make sounds of war, reminiscent of Jimmie Hendrix’s rendition of the “Star Spangled Banner”. Then, B.o.B brought out Playboy Tre for a duet of “Bet I”. Once he started “I’ll Be In The Sky”, the audience went crazy as B.o.B jumped into the crowd in an attempt at surfing the crowd. His interaction with the crowd was impeccable as he got them involved but also singled out certain people. Especially a couple who was kissing on the floor which he dedicated his song “Lovelier Than You” to them. At one point, he signed several shoes and a drum kit and threw them into the crowd as a gift from him. One throw especially would have made Joe Paterno proud when it flew from the stage, across the floor and about two rows up the bleachers. Then B.o.B. had to leave, but the crowd kept chanting his name…”B.o.B”

“My girl sent me a text message just to say “i miss you”. It wont be long before I’m home baby but the rents due” – B.o.B on “Change Gonna Come”

The crowd was able to bring B.o.B back to the stage for a couple more songs, starting with “Ghost in the Machine” on the piano. After that song, he put on a Penn State shirt and the crowd went wild. He performed some of his best hits from “B.o.B Presents the Adventures of Bobby Ray”, along with several songs from his mixtapes. It is astounding to watch him play several different kinds of guitars and the piano, along with his outstanding vocals. He performed on that stage with the comfort and ease that is, at times, hard to find. He knew how to make the show memorable.

“Let’s take a second and reflect on what we can do. To be smart and play apart in something beautiful” – Travie McCoy on “One At A Time”

After B.o.B, many people left because they thought Travie McCoy was not coming anymore to perform due to B.o.B being the headline. Unfortunately for those people, they were wrong. Travie got to the BJC late and he took “2 planes, 3 trains & 4 cars” to get here. Travie got on stage with just a DJ, a drummer, and a microphone stand that was not only taller than him but changed color as he performed different songs. Travie had a different style of music from B.o.B & Playboy Tre. His was a combination of rock and hip-hop. Even with a smaller crowd, he could still get the audience going. He performed songs like “Doctor Feel Good”, a bad boy rock anthem “Superbad”, his radio hit “Billionaire” and his latest single “Need You”. Out of everyone I have seen perform in my life, he has one of the most animated faces.

Rating: 4.6/5
