Station Philosophy
The LION 90.7fm keeps true to the tenants set forth from the birth of the original Penn State student station WDFM created back in 1951. The most important of these is that Penn State student radio is to be a training ground for students who want to learn and experience radio communications as an extra-curricular activity at Penn State.
Community Commitment
The LION 90.7fm is first and foremost bound by its FCC (Federal Communication Commission) licensure to serve the local community of State College under the call letters WKPS. This commitment as The LION 90.7fm is not limited to but extends to those who make up University Park campus of the Pennsylvania State University.
A Message from The LION's President
Penn State student radio since its inception back in 1951 has been known by many names… WDFM, WPSU, WEHR and finally as WKPS. Throughout the years of re-imaging, facility updates, controversy, change of staff and of course the music, student radio has continued to survive at Penn State. This is only because of the students who throughout the years have made up our great station.
Students are the key to this everlasting station. It is my belief that those who participate at The LION focus on their family and personal education first before the station itself. This endeavor known as student radio is and always will be second, in my eyes, to those core beliefs. That's not saying we do not strive every day to make The LION the best of the BIG 10 student stations but as a student I realize what comes first when going to Penn State.
With that said, The LION is poised for a new start once again and over the summer of 2012 has made great strides in updating and upgrading our student station. We will continue this as the new academic year starts and into 2013. I hope you enjoy, support and recognize student radio at our great university, Penn State.
