Local Artist Spotlight: Jason O

Not many people can say that they have enough music and lyrics to produce at least six albums in addition to

six others already mastered.  But at the mere age of 26, Jason O can.

Having played the guitar since he was five and writing music since he was 17, Jason O has developed his style into what he likes to describe as “funky and folky with a pop flare and honest lyrics that speak to the heart of the human experience.”

Jason O’s music truly speaks to his hectic human experience.  Two years into his Penn State experience, Jason O and his friend decided to drop out and pursue their musical careers.  After spending several months in an RV in Martha’s Vineyard and seeing fewer progress than expected, the boys decided to go back to State College to finish their degrees.  After graduating, Jason O and his fiancée, who he actually met at his first show in State College, did what every musician thinks is the best way to achieve their dreams – move to the city.

After spending a year in Brooklyn, Jason O realized that open mic nights and a set gig once a month was not the way he wanted to spend his life.  “I’m glad I went, and from an artistic perspective, I learned about the songs I wanted to write and the music I wanted to create.  But from a career perspective, it was a disaster,” Jason O said.

Now that he’s back in State College, Jason O has been writing more music than he ever has.  He draws his inspiration from artists such as Jason Mraz and Keller Williams and has written over 120 songs.

“I try to capture and convey emotions.  Not every emotion is the same and I try to write songs that fit that exact mood,” said Jason O.

Jason O has a similar acoustic feel to artists such as Jason Mraz and Amos Lee.  However, he’s a one-man band.  Whenever Jason O plays at shows, he uses a live looper.  The audience is fascinated by his ability to play guitar, sing softly and genuinely, play the harmonica, and harmonize.  The audience’s favorite tracks include, “Back to the Beat,” “Cherry on Top,” and “Show Me the Love.”

“The reason I started playing is to make people’s lives better,” said Jason O.  “I try to introduce something positive in their lives.
